One night, a few thousand years ago, a group of shepherds were tending to their flocks not far from the town of Bethlehem. Nothing was out of the ordinary for these men. The night was dark and their minds were occupied with each other and their work. They were not aware of the glorious event that had just taken place not too far away, but that was about to change.
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
Luke 2:8-14 (NIV)
This life-changing moment was not given to the chief priests, kings or anyone of influence. It was the humble shepherds God had chosen to be the first to know about his Son. They were not famous or held high positions. They were unclean, smelled and never attended worship at temple because they were always working. As a result, they were considered unworthy by society and probably felt that way themselves.
Do you sometimes feel like a shepherd? Are you so busy taking care of your family that you have little time for anything else? Do you smell? Ok, that’s not a nice question, but I admit that sometimes I am too busy to take a shower. Are you so consumed by your schedule that you sometimes skip a worship service on Sunday mornings?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are not alone. But there is good news. Jesus came for everyone, including you. You don’t have to lead an extraordinary life to be accepted by Him. Just like the shepherds, there is nothing you can do to make him love you more or less. All you need to do is accept his love.
