4 ways to slow down and enjoy the Christmas season

The holiday season is here. There are gifts to buy, decorating to be done, and cookies to bake. There’s also Christmas cards to be sent and presents to wrap. The pace of life seems to speed up during this time, and it can be exhausting.

What if this year, we slowed down instead? What if we used our time to focus more on Jesus than the hustle and bustle going on around us? When we get down to the root of the holiday, it is all about Jesus.

Taste and see how good the Lord is! The one who takes refuge in him is truly happy! - Psalm 34:8

On that very first Christmas - the night Jesus was born - there were no celebrations. There were no homemade cookies or trees strung with lights. Instead, it was a quiet and uneventful night.

I’m not suggesting we skip the festivities, but to slow down and enjoy it. How do we do that? Here are some things that I do, and I hope will work for you.

Participate in a Bible study

There are many Bible studies that focus on the season and the birth of Christ. You could find a group or do one on your own. Digging into God’s word is a great was to reflect on the season of Christmas.

Read the Bible

Pick a time every day to focus on scripture. There are a lot of Bible reading plans that prepare your heart for the birth of Jesus. You can use my December reading plan or find one online.

Keep your calendar clean

Holiday events can fill up our calendars. It’s always great to spend time with family and friends. But don’t fill your calendar with so many activities that the holiday is one big blur. The good news is you don’t have to attend them all. Pick and choose the most important ones to you. Then relax and enjoy this time with loved ones.

Give yourself permission to say no

During this season you want to slow down not speed up. It’s ok to say no to things that are time consuming or that you don’t want to do. If you don’t do any baking this year, that’s ok. There are plenty of bakeries that would be glad to have your business.

When we focus on Jesus, we will find the season more joyful and meaningful. What are some ways you slowdown in this busy season?
