Jesus showed us how to pray

Jesus prayed for us thousand of years before we were even born.

There is a planner sitting on my desk. If you were to look at it, you would notice I have time scheduled every morning for prayer.

Imagine two friends sitting on a porch swing in the early morning, drinking coffee while chatting. That’s how I picture time with God.

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that is we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. - 1 John 5:14

It’s comforting to know we can approach God in prayer and know he is listening. And he wants us to talk to him. We can tell him or ask him anything.

It is important to spend time in prayer. It opens up a line of communication with God and draws us closer to him. Prayer strengthens our faith and gives us comfort. It also changes us on the inside that allows God to shine on our outside.

Jesus spent a lot of time in prayer. He often prayed on his own but wasn’t shy about praying in front of others. Jesus wanted his disciples and everyone he met to know how important it is to talk with our Heavenly Father.

Jesus prayed alone

We have so many distractions in our lives that demand our immediate attention and pull us in many directions. Jesus may have felt this way. He was in constant demand to heal the sick. But we often see him taking a break from his work.

But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed. – Luke 5:16

He did not wait until everyone was healed to pray. Instead, he removed himself from the crowds to spend time alone with God.

Jesus prayed with others

God’s presence in prayer unites us together. We become aware of the needs of others and can provide comfort.

For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them. - Matthew 18:20

Life can be hard and there are not always answers. Sometimes we don’t know what to pray or maybe we just can’t pray. That’s when the prayer community takes over and prays for you.

Jesus prayed before a meal

Jesus prayed before meals to remind his disciples of the blessings God has provided in the food placed before them.

When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. - Luke 24:30

Praying before each meal is a reminder that that all things come from God.

Jesus prayed for others

Before Jesus was arrested and hung on the cross, he prayed for his disciples. He knew their mission was not going to be easy and prayed for their protection.

I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. - John 17:9

Jesus prayed for us

That’s right. He prayed for us thousand of years before we were even born.

My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message. – John 17: 20

Jesus prayed because he could do nothing without God, and neither can we.
