When God is asking you to wait

We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. - Psalm 33:20

The man in the car beside me honked his horn and raised his hands in frustration. It was rush hour on a Tuesday afternoon, and we were stuck in the middle of four lanes merging into two.

He was clearly upset that traffic was not moving fast enough, but there was nothing he could do about it. I understood his pain. I’m not a fan of sitting in traffic either.

What I really don’t like about traffic is waiting. Why is waiting so hard? Maybe it’s because we are not in control of the situation. There isn’t anything we can do to speed up the wait.

We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. - Psalm 33:20

There are many stories in the Bible of people waiting for something.

David waited to be king.

Joseph waited on God’s promise to make him a leader of his people.

Noah and his family waited on the ark for the water to recede.

Even Jesus waited until he was thirty years-old to start his ministry.

but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. - Isaiah 40:31

Waiting is hard. Here are some things that have helped me during the wait:

  • Deepen your faith with prayer.

  • Focus on the journey, not the destination. It is in the waiting period when God is working to prepare us for the destination.

  • Read the Bible, specifically stories of people waiting.

  • Join a Bible study.

  • Trust that God has and never will forget you. It’s all in his timing.

  • Sing. As you sing read the lyrics to the song even if you already know them. It helps to make the words come to life with feeling.

  • Take the focus off yourself and pray for someone in need

What has helped you while waiting?
